Hm............

Do squash bugs normally mate in broad daylight and on top of plant stakes, or are mine just getting cheeky?

I hate to tell you this, but I think it's fairly normal. This is just going by the tiger moths we have in Australia, which have the same attitude to mating. Anywhere, any time, although they do seem to show a preference for spots where they will be seen by humans. External walls of the house, and doors, for instance.
