Prabook.org - Identity Theft R Us

So Sunday night I discovered a new "social media" website called prabook.org, and the WAY I discovered it was to find out that someone had created a profile for ME--without my permission or knowledge--INCLUDING date and location of birth, who my parents are (including my mother's maiden name), and they even had a copy of an old resume and had uploaded all the details from that. I immediately contacted them to tell them to take it down, which they did, but they said that since anyone can add information, it could be restored, they would do nothing about it, and they assumed no responsibility for anything about their website.

I know there's a lot of information and public records available online, but the resume they got hold of was from around 1997, so it would have been printed on actual paper and mailed to companies.  It was never emailed or uploaded to anything.  So the copy they have, if not obtained illegally, was certainly obtained in an unauthorized manner via old company files or dumpster-diving.   So aside from supplying more than enough information for someone to have swiped my identity, they're doing it through unauthorized--perhaps illegal--methods.

So, make sure to do a web search on your own name on a regular basis. I had no idea anyone could be quite so clueless, but prabook.org is a real site and their policies are dangerous and inexcusable.

If you have had your profile added without your permission, I got mine removed by emailing contact@prabook.org. You will have to keep checking, because they said whoever put it up in the first place can choose to put it back up even after you ask to be removed.

9-26-15:  Updated to add:  There are a lot of comments coming from the Russian Federation (identity theft capital of the world) to say that Prabook is "just like Wikipedia."  As soon as the journalists landed in Russia for the 2014 Olympics, their computers were hacked.   If ANYONE had needed proof that Prabook is an identity-theft scam, this is it.  Please scroll the comments for the information on how to report this scam.  It is obviously NOT a legitimate business.

If your information has been published without your knowledge or consent, please file a complaint IMMEDIATELY with the Internet Crime Complaint Center at http://www.ic3.gov.

To have opened an account or profile in your name IS identity theft in the United States and is recognized as such.  If you find you have a profile on prabook.org that you DID NOT post, report them immediately with the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov.

Your information has been compromised, and protecting yourself by filing criminal reports will assist you if the data thieves try to open fraudulent accounts or use your identity in any way.

Protect yourself further by placing a freeze on your credit report with the 3 major credit entities.  This ensures no one may take out a credit card or loan in your name:
     Transunion:  www.transunion.com
     Equifax:  www.equifax.com
     Experian:  http://www.experian.com/

I found that "someone" added me to Prabook also ........ had alot of correct information which they got off the internet from different sites I am on (one being Classmates.com). I have not contacted them but did alot of digging to find out WHO owns the website and WHERE they are located : Nicosia, Cyprus (Nocosia is the capitol) and the owner's name appears to be fake. I agree it is SCARY as to WHY they started up this site 3 years ago and how ANYONE can post a Profile on there of anyone without our knowledge and agreeing to do so!!! I guess the best way to stop them is maybe contact the FBI or CIA. I did NOT contact Prabook because to do so I would have to give up my email and password through Facebook or Google ....... NOT gonna happen!

I was surprised to find a profile about myself on Prabook as well. I never asked anyone to make it so I wanted this profile to be deleted. Fortunately after contacting Prabook team and asking them to delete my information, the profile was removed.
I think as long as they satisfy removal requests, it’s ok. Services like Youtube and Wikipedia can also spread private information. That’s just how modern information society works. And if they position themselves as an online encyclopedia it’s inevitable.

Actually, a website that publishes STOLEN information is not inevitable, nor is it okay. Youtube and Wikipedia get information from public sources. PRABOOK published an illegally-obtained resume and published it. No excuse and certainly not OK.

Thank you for this blog post! I was alarmed to find my data published there, saw your post, wrote to demand they take it down immediately. I went on to find who owns the site on the WHOIS domain registry site http://whois.domaintools.com/prabook.org

found this: Registrant Email:prabook2000@gmail.com
Admin ID:CR87221425
Admin Name:Ioannis Ioannou
Admin Organization:Ableteam Holdings Limited
Admin Street: Avionos, 1 MARIA HOUSE
Admin City:Nicosia
Admin State/Province:
Admin Postal Code:1075
Admin Country:CY
Admin Phone:+357.99981993

on a different site I found site associated with Belarus and Domain registrar as Ableteam Holdings Limited

I hope they take down my information, but it's very disturbing. Thanks again.

Help! How do I contact them? Their contact link doesn't work! I need to get my profile deleted!

Same thing happened to me. DOB, place of birth, father's name, mother's name (with maiden name). Colleges with dates attended and degrees. Military service information and dates. Employment information up to last job hire in 1989; stated erroneously that I still am at that job. It was removed from the site after I emailed them, but I'm sure someone still has this information. I can't imagine where they got this information, but it must have come from a paper file.

I found that their web site is from Belarus, formerly part of the USSR. In addition to getting them to remove my information (though I was not happy about giving them my email address by emailing them), I strongly recommend that people freeze their credit ratings. After all, even though that personal data may be removed from the web, someone still has it, and many had access to it until we all stumbled upon the posting of our data.

Does anyone know if Prabook employees collect information and create these profiles or if any person can create a profile, like in Facebook?

I agree with these postings about the danger of this site. My data was also published and now they have our e-mail addresses. I am looking into finding their physical location(s) in pursuit of litigation against them. The information appears to be illegally obtained, and certainly without my permission.

Regarding the below post: Exactly what "team" at Prabook did you ask to delete your information? Our investigations show an apparent alias Aquilas Scarceli with questionable contact information in Saint Louis, Missouri. Further, Prabook is connected with Hosting Solutions International, Inc. per the aforementioned apparent alias'. This entity could not be reached and Manta.com is removing them from their data base. Multiple removal requests have been made via contact@prabook.org concerning my data which has yet to be removed. Likewise, once again to whom did you speak? Please provide their contact information.

Meanwhile, those concerned should contact the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Consumer Response Center Identity Theft Hotline at 1 (877) 438-4338. You can file a complaint via telephone with the FTC against Prabook dba/aka Hosting Solutions International, Inc. Also contact the St. Louis, Missouri Better Business Bureau at (314) 645-3300. Further contact the Division 4 Detectives of St. Louis, Missouri at (314) 231-1212. Unauthorized use and publication of private information bares consequences given the apparent dubias nature of this company and its' associates. There may also be legal ramifications, relief, and remedies regarding this matter especially identity thief, and fraud amongst other issues for which "modernization" is not an excuse. Prabook boast of allowing anyone to create a profile without the consent of the individual whose privacy is being violated. This action makes them and the violator culpable should a liable situation develop.

RECOMMENDED ACTION REGARDING PRABOOK SPONSORED BY HOSTING SOLUTIONS INTERNATIONAL INC. (HSII, HSI:

It is important to remain focused on how to prevent these type of Prabook intrusions in the future regardless as to how information was likely illegally or inappropriately obtained. Each situation may be different.
ACTION STEPS:
To that end, take some immediate time to contact (as I have with results) the Saint Louis, Missouri State Better Business Bureau (BBB) at (314) 645-3300 and file a complaint against Hosting Solutions International, Inc. (HSII, HSI) which is the company apparently responsible for sponsoring the Prabook web site.

I am in contact with the BBB and Hosting Solutions International is to remove ALL OF THE Prabook SITE effective within "three days" (by 09-18-2015) according to my BBB complaint response filed this past August 2015. Additionally, I am filing a complaint with Missouri State Attorney General, Mr. Chris Koster at (573) 751-3321 for legal action against Hosting Solutions Internatonal (HSI) because HSII is allowing Prabook to "back-up" information before removing the site (hence the "three days"). I have spoken to Mike Gold, Paul, and Zina at HSI number (314) 300-2200 who refuse to give me the name of the Prabook contact claiming of all things per Mike Gold that such disclosure would be illegal. Accordingly, the State Attorney General is the entitly for legal action against HSI. It is important the BBB have a record as well through your complaint.

Further, contact the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Consumer Response Center for Identity Theft at (877) 438-4338 and file a complaint over the telephone with them. Be sure to get a reference number and make note to whom you spoke in all matters.

Also, I am in contact with St. Louis Identity Theft Detective Romero Martinez, Jr. at (314) 444-2554. I recommend you contact all of the above, be clear and specific, file easy and necessary complaints which do not take much time at all, especially as I am suppling you with appropriate contacts. We need to take aim that our materials are not further disclosed because Mike Gold of HSI told me via telephone today (09-16-2015) that HSI is taking "three days to give the 'customer' time to back up their (Prabook being 'their') information.

Stay focused, united and take appropriate action... Refer to this message, its' content and joint concerns for others who have your same issue when contacting these authorities. The people to whom I have spoken: BBB, FTC, FBI (online identy theft at IC3.gov for the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center), Missouri Detectives/Police, and now Missouri State Attorney General office are willing to assist so be courteous as well.

Contact me via this site and / or leave your telephone number or e-mail should you require further insight or assistance.

ACTION STEPS AGAINST PRABOOK SPONSORED BY HOSTING SOLUTIONS INTERNATIONAL INC. (HSII, HSI):

FILE WITH THE BBB AGAINST HSI:
Hosting Solutions International Inc., (HSII, HSI) is responsible for sponsoring the Prabook web-site. HSI is located in St. Louis, Missouri at (314) 300-2200. I have filed complaint in August 2015 against HSI via the St. Louis, Missouri Better Business Bureau (BBB) at (314) 645-3300 with results as of 09-15-2015 that HSI is to remove all of Prabook from the internet within "three days" on 09-18-2015.

FILE WITH THE MISSOURI STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL:
In speaking to HSI employee Mike Gold on today (09-16-2015), he claims HSI is allowing "three days" so Prabook can "back up" Prabook's data. Therefore, I am filing complaint now with Missouri State Attorney General, Chris Koster at (573) 751-7948 and online at ago.mo.gov with their web-site to inhibit and hopefully prevent HSI and Prabook from further use and publication of unauthorized information. We should explore the Marquis Who's Who lawsuit option as well as mentioned.

FILE WITH THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION IDENTITY THEFT:
I also simultaneously filed complaint in August 2015 against HSI and Prabook with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Consumer Response Center Identity Theft at (877) 438-4338. The FTC can intake your complaint via telephone and their fax is (202) 326-2012. Be sure to get a reference number and make note to whom you spoke in all matters.

CONTACT MISSOURI DETECTIVES THEFT DIVISION:
I am in contact with Missouri Detective Romero Martinez, Jr. at (314) 444-2554 regarding this matter as HSI functioned with an apparent alias via Manta.com. My Manta.com executive contact is permanently "pulling" HSI from Manta.com effective this past August 2015.

FILE WITH THE FBI:
I called my local FBI who informed me to file online with their Internet Crime Complaint Center at IC3.gov (that is I as in ice cream; C as in cat; and the number 3).

How do you all want to proceed against Marquis' Who's Who? A blogger posted this interest concerning Marquis publications on "A Little Yarn..." in response to the Prabook issue. Meantime, the above action steps should discourage HSI and Prabook from publishing personal information especially if we all take action.

How do I contact "it" from the September 7, 2015 entry from "A Little Yarn...?" We should not have to sign up on any site to manipulate data to protect our privacy when that very site is the violator.

Also, somehow, my last entry did not post. I previously published similar information for your use in August 2015 regarding my filings with the BBB, et cetera. This message is my second attempt to publish comments on today. I have now saved into my files as a record i.e. "A Little Off the Beaten Path," re: Prabook (second set of entries to "A Little Yarn...," and "A Little Off the Beaten Path."

Toni,

Remember, we who have been violated by Prabook and Hosting Solutions International are all on the same team. Take that great energy and use the aforementioned contact information to address the ills of Prabook and Hosting Solutions International, Inc. In my case as well, the data may have been obtained other than a personal resume; however, the information still remains unauthorized for sale or use without my permission.

Go get 'em!!! Fight the enemy, not one another...

FYI -

Prabook still active even though Hosting Solutions International Inc (HSII, HSI) promised the St. Louis Better Business Bureau they would remove by September 18, 2015. It appears HSII is playing with words, hence even more the need to pursue them through the aforementioned authoorities.

Sorry about that--blogger emailed me your comments, but I didn't realize it was picking them off as spam. (And yet, crazy posts about magic spells make it through.) I'm off to check the spam filter for my other blog.

It appears difficult to publish the "contact information" to investigate Prabook hosted online as of 09-18-2015 by Hosting Solutions International Inc.(HSII, HSI). One more try: To file complaints, Contact: St. Louis BBB @ (314) 645-3300; Federal Trade Commission Consumer Response Center Identity Theft 1 (877) 438-4338; St. Louis, Missiour Detectives Division 4 @ (314) 444-2500 i.e. Identity Theft. Also contact FBI at IC3.gov (I as in ice and C as in Charlie with the number three), and the Missouri Attorney General at (573) 751-3321.

Stop Prabook and Hosting Solutions Incorporated from publishing and transferring or selling our data.

The big deal, which I think I've said repeatedly, is that in my case THAT is a big deal.

I don't know about Marquis's Who's Who, but the ones I remember from high school, one paid to submit a bio. I never did such a thing, nor gave anyone permission. So OF COURSE that is not how they got my profile, so it is NOT "perfectly legal." They either dumpster-dived or fished through someone's old files as my resume wasn't on the internet. Even in the US, the Supreme Court has ruled that private individuals have a right to an expectation of privacy.

In addition, Prabook is posting information AND you obviously aren't keeping up with the ease of online identity theft if you can even as "what the big deal" is.

Prabook really allows everybody with Internet access to alter its content. But this is a concept identical to Wikipedia. No doubts Wikipedia receives a number of complains about its content every day. They made a disclaimer that they are not responsible for the content: "the whole responsibility lies on its contributors". They also admit that information you find there can be “changed, vandalized or altered by someone”. Wikipedia also states that contributors, and not Wikipedia itself, are solely responsible for ensuring that someone personality rights are not infringed: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:General_disclaimer
Does in mean it should also be pursued?

What I did in my case was to create an account on their site (with an email address specially created for this, not my normal email address of course) and change all info to fake or irrelevant info.

If we all do this, then all info on this (and similar) sites will be fake and this will stop such identity theft sites from being useful to both criminals and the site owners.

As to contacting a malicious site with legitimate requests or filing a complaint, I am rather pessimistic. It's like 15 years ago we tried to politely ask spammers not to send us unsolicited messages. Now we know it does not work.
Toni said…
That is a good idea--thank you, Alexander.

I think you're right that filing a complaint with Prabook itself is probably worthless as it is obviously not dealing as a legitimate business. But it is VITAL to report them to authorities because it DOES work and does offer a great deal of personal protection here in the US (obviously they're US organizations, but maybe you have some insights for what they would be in Mexico or if it would help?), but when thieves try to open accounts or use the stolen information, having a report already filed will authorities protects the consumer.

In Google, my name is followed by my birth date, and that upsets me greatly. I am taking action by contacting all the listed authorities.

However, this has not been addressed. Is there any way to get your name (from the Prabook.org site listing) to disappear from Google? Again, the reason I want that removed is that my name is followed by my birth date, and that upsets me greatly.

I am very upset to discover that my name is listed in Google, followed by my birth date, and the Google listing points to the website prabook.org. This discovery upsets me greatly.

How can I get this entry (my name, birth date, prabook.org listing) removed from Go0ogle Search?

This might help. You can go to this page: https://support.google.com/legal/troubleshooter/1114905?hl=en

and click on web search. Then there's an option for content still appearing in web searches. I haven't tried it, but hopefully it helps

I have emailed them to take down information that I didn't give permission for.

I also found this;

Just a follow-up to say that after emailing them saying the information could be used for ID Theft, they have taken down my profile, I will be keeping an eye on it though.

After finding my name and reading this blog, I asked them to remove my name (email to contact@prabook.org) and it was removed within 2 days. So far so good. The info that they had on me seems to have come from my Marquis Who's Who biography - the info was very very similar. I guess that is the danger of getting oneself into such publications. I thought that they (Marquis) were "OK", but maybe not in retrospect!

A huge "Thank You" to all who have shared their experiences on this. I eschew social media on a personal level (although it may work well for public events and such), so I was quite surprised to find information on me. It is unsettling. It may be well intended but there is something amiss when permission is not sought, especially when personal information is revealed. It does look like a "Who's Who" entry but allowing a book to hardcopy publish something 20 years ago is quite different from publishing it on the Internet today. To publish in any method without expressed permission is unscrupulous If I give "Who's Who" permission, I don't think that allows them to sell the information to others, outside of the book publication. Perhaps the information was republished without the Marquis "Who's Who" permission? If so, what have they done to report or stop this crime? This is the link to their privacy policy. http://www.nationalregisterpublishing.com/privacy.htm
I have requested the entry on me be deleted. Based on the comments here, I am hopeful it will be removed swiftly. Thanks again "A Little Off the Beaten Path..." and all who provided such helpful comments and calls for action!

I just found my own profile on Prabook and was really alarmed. But it is true that all that information was included by my own hand in my Who's Who profile from years ago. Back then we didn't worry so much about identity theft. Things have changed of course. I edited my own information to reflect only a very general profile. As an artist I do wish to have my name out there, just not the detailed personal information. My guess is that if you simply edit your own profile, no one will be adding any further information and it is likely that most of it is already publicly available in one form or another - the likeliest culprit being Who's Who! Good luck, Everyone!

I just found myself on this prabook -- which I did not upload or authorize. I will be following the instructions you all have provided to remove this information. Thank you very much! I just wanted to say that the information they have is (with some inaccuracies) the basic information I once provided to Marquis' Who's Who. I stopped providing further information to them when I found out you pay to be included in it. I never paid. But here the information is. There are things I never put in any resume, and it has been taken a little bit beyond my Who's who submission. Unsettling!

Yesterday I received a notice from a credit card company telling me they cannot issue me a credit card since I already have one with them. Problem is, I obviously did not apply for this credit card, knowing I already have one. Who did in my name?

I googled myself today and was shocked to find an extensive Pandora profile that can be used for IDentity theft. I have no idea how long the Pandora information about me was on line since I usually don't google myself. The Pandora information is correct but somewhat old which makes me wonder about the source (Marquis?). I followed up, reported this incident to the credit card company, to the FTC, the FBI and then called Transunion to put a 90 day freeze on my credit. I will have to follow up with a written request to Transunion. I was informed, as we all know, that no one polices the internet and therefore no one entity can force Pandora to take down their site.

BEWARE of Prabook. In my last post I somehow mistook the name as PANDORA...

I appreciate all the information provided about Prabook. To follow up on my concerns, I accessed all 3 of my credit reports this morning. There were 6 recent applications for credit cards under my name - all done in the past week and all not done by me. I called the issuing banks and reported all applications as fraudulent and also called my local police. I already have the 90 day fraud alert on Transunion, Equifax and Experian. Now I'm putting on a credit freeze.

This Prabook is obviously used for identity theft and fraudulent.

I just found my profile on Prebook and I am absolutely certain that the information they had about parents etc was coming from a Who is Who information request that I filled in several years ago and did not pursue as they predictably asked for a lot of money. this is definitely one of the leaking sources.
What I did was went into the site, created an account, created a biography for myself and just put very sparse information in there (name and that's about it). I noticed when you set up the bio, it gives you the option to not let others edit your profile. I figure that way, there's a bio in there for me, but that only I have complete control over. However, I'm not sure if this prevents duplicates or not...

That's a good idea. Prabook is a criminal enterprise. I asked them to remove my data but they haven't. I had to do damage control for several days due to the irresponsible reporting of my data on Prabook and subsequent Identity Theft. I have permanently locked down the 3 reporting agencies (Experian, etc) data availability for inquiries. This data Prabook publishes goes beyond what is publicly available. I assume from what they published on me it was taken from a Marquis publication from pre-internet times. My parents names and children's names, DOB etc etc made identity theft easy. When I called the credit card companies where accounts were attempted in my name, including Walmart, Best Buy, Forever 21, Victoria's Secret, Amazon and others I was informed by Walmart and Best Buy that the applicants had substantial information about me. Victoria's Secret was out some $$$ because they did one of those opening of accounts at the checkout counter. I hope they have stopped that practice. I also informed our bank manager and she put a watch on our account. My email has also been hacked but this might be a separate event. I have a separate password for every account I have, change them frequently and believe me, they are almost unbreakable. Still, I'm very vigilant with bills for fraudulent charges.
