You know, the really insulting thing about yesterday's bread--well, besides the fact that a bread machine is supposed to be easier than making bread from scratch--is that I had actually made that recipe before without problems. It's from this book
and I had notes written down on the recipe saying it was really good. None of the notes said it would come out looking like modern art, and I'm pretty sure I would have noticed. I couldn't actually try the same recipe again today as I was out of cream and wasn't about to go to the store for this, so I made a "milk loaf." A completely boring white-flour-only bread, and I didn't even try to sneak in whole wheat flour. I admit it--my confidence had been shattered. I was going to ........follow the recipe!Sigh....
I dumped everything in, started it, and went to the gym for a swim.
Three hours later, it was the moment of truth:
Sort of.
I have no idea why it looks this--from this angle it looks a bit like the Gumby of Bread, doesn't it? And it tastes like you'd expect--incredibly boring. However,
a slather of cherry jam covers a multitude of blunders........

I find that most white loaves in the breadmaker end up with an over-risen and somewhat deformed crust, just like the one you have there. I've given up worrying about it; after all, if the hole from the stirrer isn't a problem, why should a lopsided crust be an issue? And J prefers that bit anway...
